It’s October and that means it’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month. While most people are aware of breast cancer, this is the time of year that serves as a great reminder about the importance of living a healthy lifestyle and of early detection.

For the month of October, we will display pink ribbons on our trucks in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It’s our hope that we are bringing further breast cancer awareness as our trucks make their way along the Los Angeles streets and freeways.

Statistics on breast cancer: In 2012, it is estimated that there will be over 200,000 new cases of breast cancer in women and over 39,000 deaths. Men can also get breast cancer, although it’s less common. In 2012, it is estimated that there will be more than 2,000 new cases of breast cancer in men and over 400 deaths.
Risk Factors: There are several things that increase risk, which include age (1 out of 8 breast cancers are in women younger than 45, while 2 of 3 are found in women age 55 or older), a family history of breast cancer, women who have no children or had their first child after 30, and use of birth control pills.
Prevention: As with so many other issues, diet and exercise are key factors. Stay physically active and make sure to eat fruits and vegetables. Limiting refined foods and processed and red meat is also helpful. Limiting alcohol intake (one drink per day for women and two drinks for men) and not smoking can also beneficial.
Early detection: Finding breast cancer in the early stages is crucial. Monthly self-examinations are an extremely important way to identify potential problems along with mammograms and/or other tests can also be performed by a medical professional to help detect breast cancer.
